Before the new standards took effect, instruction focused more on quantity. If the student's didn't hear or understand the information taught to them the teacher would move forward in instruction. Not only were goals not being met, in most cases goals and standards were not being set for students. Now with the CCSS in ELA and Literacy, teachers can pause, deepen and apply quality eduction to their students. For example reading one on one and assessing students at their own reading level and providing them with literature for that level and tracking for
In high school, I was worried about the writing test before and after I took the test. My grade was good but could have been better with more practice. In elementary school, I was just happy to finally get into the big kid school and then I realized all the reading and writing work I had to do all the
Summary/ Response Assignment O`Malley, Patrick. “More Learning, More Testing” In “More Testing, More Learning,” Patrick O`Malley suggests that college professors should give tests to the students periodically in order for the students to learn more. Furthermore, more tests or exams will minimize the student’s stress because students will be more familiar with the subjects that are given to them. Like the author says, “If professors gave an additional brief exams at frequent intervals, student would learn more, study more regularly, worry less, and perform better on midterms, finals, and other papers and projects.” (O`Malley, pg. 488).
If assignments aren't turned in for the day, I will ask the student why it wasn't completed and send a note home to the parents. I will inform the parent that the student will be allowed to make up the assignment, but some points will be deducted. I will explain to them the importance of turning in the assignment on time and that some points are better than no points. If assignments are continuously being missed by a particular student, I will type up a contract and I will have the students sign it. Anytime an assignment is missed after this, I will pull the contract out and explain to them the importance of their word.
Using reading comprehension techniques will help me better understand what I have read. I plan to use the following strategies: (http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=4465 ) Activate prior knowledge, and connect the applicable prior experiences to the reading (if students don't have the requisite background knowledge about a topic, they will be unable to
If you are going to miss a quiz, have a legitimate reason, and can make the quiz up in the testing center before the next class, then contact me before the end of the class by email or voicemail. • Show up prepared for class. You will need a graphing calculator for this class. I do not have additional calculators to lend
Devin Dufrene Essay 4 April 14, 2009 Failure Failure! Some students are afraid of it, Then again some students are given grades and passed anyway. Students should not be given grades and diplomas if they did not learn the necessary information and earn the grade. In this essay I will respond on how I agree with Mary Sherry in “In Praise of the F Word “on how students are hurt later in life First, if student doesn’t learn necessary information in high school he or she will not be able or having a lot off trouble in the after life with college or there new job. In example, if a student gets by in his English class not caring and not trying to learn, but his teacher likes the student so he passed him, when that student goes to college he will have trouble because he doesn’t know how to write a correct essay because he was given the grade.
I felt superior over the other kids even though we all struggle at the same thing I knew sooner or later I will be able to speak normal without my accent yet I will still be smarter at the end. I felt that I did not need to master English I just needed to know enough to make it through life. This feeling grew inside me and became worse when I was in middle school. In my first year in middle school my English teacher told the class how everyone will be required to take the Scholastic Reading Counts program. The program was designed to encourage reading, students go to the school library and select books to read that have a green sticker on the front.
The thesis of Mary Sherry’s essay is that teachers and parents need to take further action to help their students earn their diplomas. The main points Sherry expresses in her essay are that students barely have any motivation to focus in school, how students are not satisfied with their academic skills, and ways that teachers can get their students to study. First, Sherry mentions in the essay, “…but, as I rediscover each time I walk into the classroom, before a teacher can expect students to concentrate, he has to get their attention, no matter what distractions may be at hand” (Sherry 515). I agree with what she said because I am a recent high school graduate who would always want to be everywhere but school. Another main
It decides if they go into remedial, regular, or advanced classes. Then some students end up learning more than others where learning actually counts because administrators want to get them test ready. Before, teachers taught the subject and sometime throughout the year students took a test without pressure that they would be held back or certain things like that. Teachers are also affected because they actually have to teach two courses. There is a period out of the year where they can only teach about the subjects on the test.
