How to motivate high school students By Zoe Daniel Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s as a teenager was not as hard as it is in today’s society for the teenagers of today. The difference is we were motivated by our parents, neighbors and teachers to go to school and get our education. It was always said it takes a village to raise a child. That is so true. However, in today’s society and with the child abuse law most parents are afraid to discipline their children/teenagers. Neighbors turn their heads, teacher are not as involved with communicating with the parents as often as they should. Why, because the parents are not involved with their child’s school life or social life. The teenagers of today are exposed to so much of the outside world it is hard for them to focus on what is most important to them and that is a good education. With saying that it is even harder to get the teenagers motivated to complete high school. Every teenager wants to graduate however, they are just graduating to get out of school away from home whether it’s a single parent home or two parent home. They are not excited or motivated to be moving on to the next phase in life and that’s college life. My parents use to reward me every time I would come home with a good report card. It worked for me and my siblings. I used the reward system for my children and it worked for them. They went to college and have great jobs. The rewards system is good; however, it’s not always effective. To get high students to complete their classes successfully, with a sense of accomplishment and pride parents and teachers should be more involved with that teenager. Children and teenagers want to see that you are interested in their education and not just rewarding them passing them on as if they were a Pawn in a chess game. Paying money for good grades, or extending a curfew is not always the answer.
