Fluid intelligence doesn’t look much like the capacity to memorize and recite facts, the skills that people have traditionally associated with brainpower. But building it up may improve the capacity to think deeply that Carr and others fear we’re losing for good. And we shouldn’t let the stresses associated with a transition to a new era blind us to that era’s astonishing potential. We swim in an ocean of data, accessible from nearly anywhere, generated by billions of devices. We’re only beginning to explore what we can do with this knowledge-at-a-touch.
Does he have a motive to distort the details of his endeavors or is he relating the truth and nothing but the truth. I believe the revelations are credible because there are actual footage supporting Perkins claims. Has this book in any way impacted your understanding of the world and how it works? Confessions of an Economic Hit Man has impacted my understanding of the world and how it works in terms of understanding how we have grown to become a global super power. Unfortunately, our wealth has been at the disadvantage of other countries.
Winner-Take-All Politics; a book which defends the middle and lower class by stating that the richest 1% is getting richer because of political forces. The authors argue that the structure of our government has created economic woes and inequalities in our society, that interest groups play a big part in politics, and that those at the top of the economic ladder use their power to better themselves economically, leaving the rest the USA, the 99% struggling to maintain economic stability. The structure of the government has contributed tremendously to US economic woes and inequality. The main structures of our government that are creating these economic woes are: separation of powers, the legislative process, and federalism. Separation of
With the recurrent expansion of scientific knowledge and technology in today’s society, new inventions, theories, and ideas are frequently brought into practice. All though new technologies and advancement in understanding of the world around us is crucial to scientific expansion, the outcomes of these ideas aren’t always positive. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the original practices of Eugenics both serve as correlations to vast and ever-growing scientific universe. These two works can be related in their ability to serve as sources of caution during innovation of science. Nevertheless, both Frankenstein and Eugenics can also be dissimilar from that of one another.
I’d Hammer Out Freedom: Technology as Politics and Culture The evolution of technological innovation has benefited the world dramatically. In Richard Sclove’s article, “I’d Hammer Out Freedom: Technology as Politics and Culture”, he argues that we should do more to understand technology’s influence on society. This paper will analyze Richard Sclove’s context, and reflect on people’s relationship with technology. In conclusion, the context will be reviewed to identify if the development of technology, and how it changes the way someone lives in a positive or negative way. Polypotency Within the reading the term polypotency is used to describe technology’s role(s) within society.
Kimani Blake Professor Cope English 125 24 October 2013 Education’s Collateral Damage In Education’s Collateral Damage, Herbert expresses how important the effects of stratification may be to the educational system. Herbert also discusses what Tom Vander Ark states which is “We’re seeing a scary level of income stratification that is the result of educational stratification”. (Ark 1) Still today we see a diverse result on stratification because it is more likely that low income class of people will dropout more than high income class of people. To be more in depth, I believe what Ark feels about stratification is related to Herbert’s essay by how stratification leads to no balance in this country. Furthermore, if we keep seeing dropout
He reveals how new digital technology is unleashing a gush of creative production that will revolutionize our world. Cognitive Surplus explores what's possible when people unite to use their intellect, energy, and time for the greater good. The author argues that instead of internet taking away the ability read it, it’s giving an opportunity to learn more and express more. Although the author does not talk particularly about the effect of brain in his book but he does indirectly convey the message that use of technology will help the world transform in to a better one. Since this is a book and it’s written by a well- known professor at NYU, this source is credible and it serves as a counter argument to my thesis.
All the policies and action Obama is taking, will make him transformational in the end. He understands if we keep ignoring problems in our society and keep letting them become bigger, then America could essential be in the worst shape it has ever been. We need major reform and we need it now. Obama is attempting to not make everyone equal, but build up the middle class again. Americans are growing further and further apart when it comes to money, and this is contributing to the major problems like: unemployment, education, and inequality.
Global study is the innovation of raising technologies and intercommunications around the world. It is a “perspective that looks as human society as a whole” (p.1) and integrates past history events into the new advanced world to make it a better place. The transition from the early continental empires to later colonial empires had such an astounding impact on the course of world history because it created a system of governance based on conquest and led to the development of political, economic, and cultural integration. Thus, those elements changed and shaped the world we live in today. The system of governance based on conquests ignited the world to divide itself into sections.
Conflict Theory has a macro sociological approach which means it has been done on a large scale using statistics, figures and research. One main feature of Conflict Theory is that there are power differentials within society and that these are in place to control and constrain those who aren’t in power to enable them to keep valuable resources to themselves resulting in those who are not in power or within the “ruling classes” to face inequality as they are unable to access these resources. These resources are private education, health care and better quality of housing amongst others. Another feature of Conflict Theory is that this conflict will result in change and that society is ever changing. While this feature can be used to explain incidents and changes that have occurred within society there is still a large gap between the resources available to those who are considered lower class or underclass compared to those with wealth within the United Kingdom and according to The Guardian newspaper inequality has risen faster in Britain than in any other country since 1975.
