HIST 120 – Wk. 2 PS Documents Christopher Columbus (1493) Juan López de Palacios Rubios, Il Requerimiento (1510) Bartolomé de las Casas (1552) Christopher Columbus, Letter to Luis De Santangel, 1493 Christopher Columbus, who was born and reared in Genoa, Italy, obtained most of his early seafaring experience in the service of the Portuguese. As a young man, he became intrigued with the possibility, already under discussion in many seafaring circles, of reaching Asia by going not east but west. Columbus's hopes rested on several basic misconceptions. He believed that the world was far smaller than it actually is.
Christopher Columbus Cristoforo Colombo, or Christopher Columbus, was probably born in Genoa Italy in 1451. In his youth, Columbus went to Portugal, then the most advanced seafaring nation, at least once he sailed down the coast of West Africa. He married, had a son and was widowed; later he had a second son by a woman that he chose not marry due to her low social status. Up until the mid 1500s and the time of Copernicus, the dominant paradigm was a Geocentric one with the Earth at the centre of the universe and the sun, moon and stars revolving around it in perfect spherical orbits. This supported Christian teachings about God's creation and the importance of humanity.
John Cabot John Cabot was born Giovanni Caboto in the Italian port of Genoa in 1450. He moved to Venice in 1461, or possibly earlier, and helped with the family spice trading business and gained citizenship in 1476. Cabot was taught cartography, navigation, astronomy, mathematics and seamanship. He belonged to the Roman Catholic Church and married a woman called Mattea. John and Mattea Cabot had three sons named Ludovico, Sebastiano, and Sancto.

And during this first voyage in 1492, he landed in the new world and the outcome for this discovery was introduction to civilization. This is a reason why Americans should celebrate Columbus Day as a national holiday because thanks to the discovery, America was introduced to the world of civilization. According to the article by Michael S. Berliner he states that “Prior to 1492, what is now the United States was sparsely inhabited, unused, and undeveloped. The inhabitants were primary hunter- gatherers , wandering across land , living from hand- to mouth and from day to day”. 5 When Columbus met the indigenous people he thought that they were “guileless and generous”.

Christopher Columbus is the figure that I’m referring to. Columbus had many expeditions and many voyages. Columbus left Spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Niña alongside whenever he was credited with discovering the Americas. But before Columbus discovered America, he had a past. A past that was very significant and interesting as well.
