HOW TO BOOST SELF-ESTEEM Be true to yourself. Live your own life - not the life others have decided is best for you. You'll never gain your own respect and feel good about yourself if you aren't leading the life you want to lead. If you're making decisions based on getting approval from friends and relatives, you aren't being true to yourself and your self-esteem is lowered. Accept compliments with a simple Thank You. By doing this you feel worthy of praise. By thinking you don't deserve the compliments you are telling yourself that you don't feel worthy of praise. Using affirmations helps boost your self-esteem. Begin by writing on a note card something like "I am a valuable, loveable person and I deserve the best life has to offer." Look at that card 3x a day and repeat it to yourself and truly believe it for by doing this you begin to start having positive feelings about yourself. Give thanks. Show gratitude for your life and the people in it. Go after your goals. Figure out what it is that makes you happy in life, and make it a point to spend lots of time doing it. Be positive. Smile often, give compliments to yourself and others, and stop thinking negatively about yourself. The "real you" is a magnificent, unique being with enormous potential and capacity for experiencing love of yourself and extending love to others. As your self-esteem grows, this "real you" emerges. You begin to take more risks and not be afraid of failure; you are not as concerned with getting approval of others; your relationships are much more rewarding; you pursue activities that bring you joy and satisfaction; and you will make a positive contribution to the world. Most importantly, high self-esteem brings you peace of mind. When you are alone, you truly appreciate the person you're with-yourself.
