For example, the most effective method would be, to respect the students and their feelings before they can respect you. Dr. Michaels stated that, “You will gain respect by knowing the emotional, physical, and psychological place of your students. “Show that you care.” This all leads back to students wanting to know that their teacher not only cares about their education but them as an individual. As an after school instructor, I have dealt with many cases where a students didn’t feel like they had to show me respect right off the bat. Which is something that I can understand, because children don’t really comprehend the importance of respect or manners, its something that has to be taught to them.
A teacher with high expectations for his or herself will ultimately pass that quality on to their students. Caring comes naturally for great teachers. When a teacher genuinely cares for the students entrusted to them, they are able to reach them with greater ease. Great teachers make their classroom a place where caring is the norm. In a climate of care, students are more inclined to take up for each other, protect each other, and teach others how to care.
The teachers had to be responsible for students’ physical safety, safety from insult and diminishment, and even “there was safety to take risks, to push beyond what you can comfortably do at present” (46). Only such a guarantee could bring students psychological and spiritual comfort in their studies. Beside safety, the respect of people toward others was also important in a democratic classroom, especially toward students of different ethnicities. “From what I could tell, it meant many things, operated on many levels: fair treatment, decency, an absence of intimidation, and, beyond the realm of individual civility, a respect for the history, the language and culture of the peoples represented in the classroom” (46). They had to respect each other’s background, language and history.
As a teacher, my primary responsibility is to ensure that learners are enrolled onto the correct course, in terms of meeting their needs, abilities and aspirations. Further to this, I need to ensure that my learner is on the appropriate course in terms of meeting their award and organisational requirements. The pre-service educator thinks if someone who encourages learning along with required truths is known as an ideal educator. Additionally, there are more than a few facets needed of a teacher like imagination, inspiration, and eagerness; one needs these facets to survive as an educator. Indeed, as a continuing occupation this has been a high request for every person in the education line of work. On the other hand, recognizing that the students are the future, they are worth the facets of education. By being familiar with the philosophies of education has helped the pre-service identify with and the ones that correlates with the per-service principles are behaviorism, essentialism, and progressivism.
Apart from the many other common reasons for becoming a teacher (“I feel a calling to teaching”; “it’s a chance to positively impact the community” and “children need good/better role models”), ultimately, I believe that teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, and that it will lead to a brighter future for myself, and my family. I’m certain people would perceive pedagogy as a career that would continually put someone through a tremendous amount of stress, and although this could be true, it is why people should be praised for deciding to pursue this profession. Teachers must set this in place. ELL Teachers have to uncover a way to motivate and encourage their students to do their best. If a student is feeling good about himself or herself in an unfamiliar situation this will cause their affective filter to become low which will facilitate risk-taking behavior. This step is very important. A student needs to feel comfortable before taking the next step in the classroom.
