There are over 22 million cases of child accidents reported every year, inside their homes. Statistics have, however, indicated that nine out of ten of these incidences can be prevented by following basic household safety measures. It is necessary to note as a new mom that your child can easily get into a problem or accident much faster than you can imagine. This is because there are a number of dangerous spots, both inside and outside the house, which we believe are safe, but they are indeed dangerous spots for the babies. As a new mom, it is advisable to note some of the basic household precautions you should observe before your baby begins crawling. I am going to take you through some of the basic household safety precautions to observe in the house and in the yard. The first thing to note, when baby proofing your house, is to identify areas where the dangers lie and the possible measure to take. The most common areas where dangers lie include the bathroom, doors, windows, electricity, fireplace, and stairways (Warner & Warner, 2000). You should cover all the unoccupied electric sockets with safety plugs that cover all the three holes. This is because, as soon as babies begin crawling, they always try to put their fingers or pins into the exposed sockets, which can lead to a severe burn or electrocution. Additionally, you should not assume to cover all the exposed electric outlets that are behind chairs and cupboards (Smith, 2006). All the windows should be locked and window guards installed to prevent the baby from falling outside. Beds, playpen, crib, and high chairs should not be placed next to the window as a baby can climb on them and fall outside. Doorknob covers should be installed on the doors, which you do not want your child to open. Also install decals, on sliding doors, so that the baby will not run into them.
