A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experience add much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community or an encounter that demonstrate the importance of diversity to you: As a young African-American woman from, Detroit statistics say that I will not achieve any type of a higher education. Detroit has been labeled as one of the nation’s most impoverished cities. Conditions are only worsening and drugs, gangs, and teen pregnancy are prevalent. I come from a single-parent household, where my mom struggled to provide a better life for me. She has also acted as both the mother and father figure in my life. Higher education has yet to be achieved from anyone in my family and the statistics say I probably will not achieve it either. However, I plan to overcome these statistics by allowing myself to experience what my family has yet to experience, by becoming the first to receive a college in my family. Although I’m currently fighting against the odds, I have been blessed to experience working with programs like the Youth Dialogue at U of M-Ann Arbor. The Youth Dialogue has given me the opportunity to explore what is outside of my surroundings. Interacting and conversing with others has helped me to reduce my social isolation and increase diversity within my life. I now feel comfortable talking with other people from different ethnicity without feeling awkward or stereotyping that person. The skills I have learned from this program have provided me with confidence to break free from my segregated community and have also allowed me to continue to challenge my barriers by staying involved in other programs similar to the Youth Dialogue that promote diversity.
