How Religion and Philosophy Have Influenced One Another Philosophy and religion have had great influence over one another throughout history and it continues today. The Bible, the most widely recognized religious text in America, originated somewhere around 1500 BC and the first person to present a philosophy was Thales who was born around 624 BC. Assuming that he began sharing his philosophy sometime around his twentieth year, that would mean that philosophy technically was expressed somewhere around 644 BC. He believed that water was the origin of all things. The Bible says that “The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters“. In Genesis the Bible states that “God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth‘; and it was so.“ According to the text life came from this particular deity speaking it into being. This is an example of how philosophy and religion first contradicted each other. Because water must have existed for life to come about in his philosophy this would arguably be a problem. Each religion has its own philosophy, but not all philosophies have a religion. These religions do not necessarily follow any specific philosophy, but they are all based on philosophies that the believers have deemed acceptable and true. Many center on a deity, some have no deity, and others have a belief of pantheism. This varies by location in the world. Just as religions have spread, philosophies have also. Philosophies deal with what is real and what can be proven, much of the time by science. Religions have a tendency to be more abstract. How can one prove that there is a God? Or on the other hand, how can one prove that there is not. Philosophies do not
