How Real is Reality Television Really? After a long day at work or school, many people go home to sit back, relax, and watch television programs. In some cases, that may be competitions, talent shows, self-improvement seminars, or reality TV shows. Reality TV plays a huge role in people’s lives. It can effect or improve your lifestyle, reality TV can bring out the best or worst in people, and it can also be very entertaining to watch. Although reality TV is entertaining, many of the shows are unbelievable due to the behavior of the characters, the behavior that many shows seem to encourage, and how the majority of reality shows negatively impact society standards . Reality TV exploits bad behavior and characteristics. It portrays certain images and values of those who participate in a reality television program that can’t be accepted into society. These images and values are not role model statuses to children and teenagers who are exposed to reality TV. In the article “Reality Television Has No Value,” James Wolcott says, “Proof, perhaps, that the ruinous effects of Reality TV have reached street level and invaded the behavioral bloodstream, goading attention junkies to act as if we’re all extras in their vanity production” (1). The poor behavior or “street level” act that is shown on television is foul language, overacting, making bad decisions, and making a fool out of themselves. The behavior that is shown on reality TV has reached a new level where it affects viewers who watch television. The participant’s behavior shows a negative aspect to their personality, which creates a horrible example to viewers. These characteristics show another side to someone, which makes them appear like a bad human being. These characteristics also lead viewers to act a certain way instead of the person they really are.
