Psychology is used in virtually every aspect of our daily lives from thinking of a way to solve a problem to raising a family. Some specific areas where psychology can help improve one’s daily life is to help with motivation, improve memory, and better understand others. Of course, there are several ways psychology can assist in our lives, but these are a few that can directly improve our day-to-day behaviors and lifestyles.

First, psychology plays a role in motivational behaviors in several ways.   It can assist with the redirection of behaviors, learning about yourself and self-discovery, learning new things, developing different thought processes over your lifespan and rewarding yourself. In Psychology, I’ve learned that neurotransmitters, which are your body’s internal chemical messengers, play a key role in behaviors. An example is Acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that helps in movement of our body’s from blinking an eye to doing handstands. Dopamine, another neurotransmitter, is involved in rewarding sensations, learning, attention and memory. Endorphins are responsible for helping to regulate pain perception and positive emotions. Then, the endocrine system is responsible for glands that secrete hormones our bodies need such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are needed for our body’s response to stress, danger, fear, anger and other emotions. Essentially, this explains a variety of our different behaviors based on our biological systems. Consciousness is also responsible for our motivational behaviors. Our mental alertness is regulated by circadian rhythms, which refers to biological processes that systemically fluctuate over 24 hours. Some of these bodily processes include pain perception, blood pressure and secretion of different hormones. We also have the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), which is the body’s internal pacemaker that manages the timing of those circadian rhythms. Our understanding of these systems helps explain why we...
