The primary topic of the paper discusses the importance of persuasion employed by political candidates to increase political activism. Like any other institution, political rhetoric in local campaigns continue to impact the outcome of the general election. Along with, personal appreance form the candidates and local and notation debates. A campaign is composed of several elements but not limited to the primary factor of persuasion. One cannot attempt to appeal to a mass audience or stimulate rapport with constituents without a strong message. The way in which the candidate composes that message is employed by a series of marketing strategies; free media, paid media, social media, personal ads and local meet and greets and agenda-setting. These campaign tactics inform and engage citizens on a candidate’s characteristics, track records and policies. This is in hope that one would buy into the message and become a suppotor of the candidate. Nevertheless, how one explores these strategies is centered on understanding persuasion of beliefs and argument believability. The message composition becomes essential is solidifying one’s campaign. “Rybicki and Fenno assert that candidates tend to lose elections by not settling on a theme or policy or lack of financial resources. A candidate cannot begin to build rapport with constituents if they leap from one message to another, one policy to the next, or one issue to the other. The importance of consistency becomes imperative in determining the outcome of an election. Argument believability is essential in drafting the winning message” (173). Ranganath, Spellman and Joy-Gaba (2010) examine two literatures: cognitive-based induction and social persuasion.
