International Business Assignment Topic: Explain why and how firms become multinational enterprises. Abstract This essay assignment will outline and summarize, in detail, the framework and workings of Multinational Corporations. Multinational corporations are necessary in the growth of the world economy and can offer an array of benefits. Also, this assignment will attempt to clearly and informatively explain why firms become multinational enterprises (MNE’s) as well as following the firm’s individual goals how they are able to become a multinational enterprise. This essay will focus on the various strategies and theories relating to the success and outcomes and investments that are desired by the multinational firm by drawing from examples from varied companies that have succeeded. This essay consisting of 3 separate parts will provide an adept summary of how firms become multinational enterprises and why they embark on these costly and risky ventures enabling them to play on a larger stage of the global economy. Background Multinational firms are considered truly globalized when they set up production facilities in more than 1 country. When resources are internalized within a company due to specific advantages that will be mentioned later on in this assignment, a multinational is born. A strategic way that firms can become globally recognized internationally is through Foreign Direct Investment. Foreign Direct Investment (or FDI) is the highest most sophisticated level of market entry.
