“How much do you agree with the statement that Henry was a Catholic?” When Henry VII took over the throne in 1509, there was much uncertainty over whether he had good enough qualities to rule England. One of these was that he had no experience of being king. He had not been trained as he has not meant to become king, in fact it was meant to be his brother, Arthur. He also married a Catholic, Catherine of Aragon, and at the time Catholics were becoming unpopular. Also, he needed an heir which Catherine of Aragon was not giving him. He had a daughter, Mary, but Henry was justifiably concerned about the political consequences of leaving a female heir. In the Tudor period, people believed it was unnatural for women to rule over men. Henry was also bankrupt as he had fought many expensive wars in Europe but his main problem was the church. He needed to control the English church as he resented an outsider being in control of such a big part in English life so he wanted control of the church in his own country. He wanted power, but needed money in order to get it. In order to get money, he needed control of the monasteries, so it was very important. This was because religion was very important in this period. Religion made people obey rules and laws. Also, depending on the monarch you could be killed because of your religious views. As there was not much scientific evidence in those times, many answers were given on belief. Some popes led armies into battle and every country in Western Europe was Catholic. People were afraid of hell, so they paid the pope ‘indulgences’ which got them out of Purgatory. Therefore, religion was very important, not mentioning how wealthy the churches were. Many people argue Henry was Catholic however others believe he was protestant. At a young age, we can all agree Henry was Catholic, as he was married to a Catholic and had no issues with
