During school time, Scout is told off by Miss Caroline, and becomes very concerned by Miss Caroline telling her to stop learning to read from her father. This matter obsesses her and she mulls over it endlessly, even going as far as to form a “new grudge against Calpurnia”, who had taught her how to read. Jem is the more secure of the two, perhaps because he is older and therefore more mature. He does not seem to exhibit any fear of the changes brought about by the new school year. People in the story like “The boss” just thought that Lennie wasn’t smart because he just didn’t talk much unless it was to his best friend George. There was ignorance in Raymond because his brother thought that he could remove Ray from his schedules at his home and take him with him. The Ignorance was that Ray needed those schedules or he will have a fit.
His father Baba thinks he is not tough enough; Amir allows Hassan to protect him when he is bullied. Amir worries that Baba does not like him because Amir's mother died giving birth to him. Amir also writes stories. His father is not very interested, but his friend Rahim Khan reads them and encourages him. Amir does not have the courage to talk to his dad or stand up for himself.
Holden feels depressed from the prior events in his family, and no longer has the desire to learn or strive to be successful. Holden feels distant from his family, and needs their loving care. After a rough childhood, Holden just needs someone, like Phoebe, there for him. Yes, boys are bad at school; I can say this because I’m a boy and I see everything first hand, my peers are less and less interested in school and college, they often talk about just either dropping out of high school and getting a job, graduating and just work and not go to college or simply join the military. If they fall back on their work they don’t get any special treatment and thus are not helped, they are simply left to fail. I am not one of those boys, mostly because my parents wouldn’t stand for it and no matter how much they get on my nerves when it comes to school, I understand why they push me. They simply don’t want their oldest son ending up in a dead-end job for the rest of his life.
