Even though he is innocent, because he is black, there is almost no chance he will win. As Atticus says, "In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins" (Lee 249). Tom has a right to justice too, but society thinks he does not deserve it because he is different. Next is the Finch family. They are not black and are well respected by the community, until Atticus is assigned to defend Tom.
Trueblood is also a shrewd man who understands the workings of the white power structure, manipulating it to his advantage. After receiving his eviction notice from the college, he refuses to uproot his family and give up his home. Realizing that he has no chance of openly challenging Bledsoe, Trueblood appeals to his boss, Mr. Buchanan, who writes a letter to Sheriff Barbour on his behalf, describing his situation. When the sheriff along with some other men, after listening to Trueblood's story, reward Trueblood with food, drink, and tobacco, instead of condemning him, Trueblood
Dolphus Raymond is objected to this discrimination because of his choice to have relations with an African American woman. The people in Maycomb judge Dolphus Raymond for having children with the African American woman and think poorly of his decisions. To avoid confrontation with anyone as to why he chooses to live his life like that, he walks around drinking a beverage from a brown paper bag and sways when he walks. Scout, Jem, and Dill have a conversation with him and realize that he is not an alcoholic, he just pretends to be to avoid people from questioning his actions. Aunt Alexandria too shows this behavior when Scout asks if Walter Cunningham can come over for lunch.
It made me think that Boo Radley might not be bad. Maybe he was trying to be good but he didn’t know how, because after almost 20 years of not being nice, (actually of not being anything at all) tis hard to suddenly be nice to someone else. Boo liked the kids, but he couldn’t go over and talk to them, not only because he didn’t know how but because he was afraid he would scare
Exploring and understanding different characters decisions and beliefs truly helps reveal human morality. Aside from Scout, her father Atticus helps explore the good and bad of the Maycomb community. Atticus understands that, rather than being good or evil, everyone has good and bad qualities. The important thing is to appreciate the good qualities and understand the bad qualities by being comprehensive to others and trying to see life from their shoes. “You never really understood a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around it.” pg 30.
Atticus Finch's actions in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee show that to truly know a person's convictions we must observe his or her actions. Atticus, a small-town lawyer in a racist, white, southern town was charged with defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused or raping a white woman. Before he took this talk Atticus spoke like a person who believed in fairness and equality. After taking on this task, despite ridicule from the people in his town, it was obvious he believed in the ideals of which he spoke. Another example, which further demonstrates that a person's true feelings can only be discerned by his or her actions, is Arthur Dimsdale's behavior in The Scarlet Letter.
He will do anything for money, as made apparent by his suing Tom Robinson for rape, simply because he knows he’ll win the case by sheer fact of his race. The town decides to let him hunt off-season in order to feed his children, as they shouldn’t be punished for his affliction, which absorbs assets as any addiction is prone to. Lastly, and sadly so, are the African Americans, who are unjustly cast to the bottom of the ladder simply because of their skin color. They are willing, but unable, to move up the social scale, forced to do the least-paying and most dangerous
Scout learns a major lesson which is not to kill a Mockingbird. She learns that Boo is simply an innocent mockingbird and does not harm just sings and Boo just suffered from his fathers cruel intentions which made the town see him as a harmful creature. The children and Boo never had a physical connection or chemistry but this barrier is soon broken when he saves the children form Bob Ewell. Scout now understands and see’s Boo as actually a real creature although she still points at him, which shows her transformation is still in progress she treats Boo like a real person. When Atticus fails to understand that Boo was the one who killed Bob, Scout explains Atticus a lesson which is usually visa versa, that you must never kill a Mockingbird and by exposing and giving him the negative publicity towards Boo it would be like killing him in a way.
ask about kids hobbies or interests. maybe a new neighbor will become a new buddy. even if your neighbor doesn't turn out to be your new best friend a friendly wave accompanied by a, "how's the family," helps create a community feeling. good communication can translate into respect. For example if you're having a party, it is out of respect you would inform your neighbors to the expecte noise.
