Through the movie her father starts dating and gets engaged to a woman whom tries to help Vada with her emotional feelings. The story line takes a turn when Vada best friend dies from bee stings while trying to retrieve her mood ring she lost in the woods. Vada is in her middle childhood and that is a rough time for most girls at this age. Vada spends time worrying about herself and how she is changing physically. Vada is also a becoming a hypochondriac and misconceptions of death and how that evolves in her world.

In fact, losing a loved one helps an individual to prepare to face similar situations in the future. For example, Addy loses so many people throughout the novel that she eventually gets used to it. To handle the death of her first baby, Addy decides to leave Detroit and find another home: "The wind shook the windowpanes and the house on Chestnut Street groaned at the loss of yet another soul. Addy was still weak from the efforts of her labour, and still sore and bleeding, but she knew she had to leave and she had to leave today" (Lansens 271).
In Raney’s mind, Charles was placing blame on her, her family, and specifically, her mother who spent most of her time taking care of Uncle Nate. This caused Raney to leave Charles and stay with her Aunt Flossie for a period of time. This incident opened both their eyes about their communication and conflict issues and forced them to come up with a way to deal with their problems before it leads to a failed marriage. P2 Jane is 24 and has recently lost both her parents in a car accident and has turned to drugs as a coping mechanism. Because of her drug habit Jane is facing losing her job and her boyfriend of 4 years has also suggested they break up. People we love can die at any stage in our life and it is always hard to deal with the pain of losing a loved one, however the pain is even greater when we lose them at a young age or if we lose them unexpectedly. Death affects every person differently and people have different ways of coping with the death of people they love.
