To make a film, many things are accommodated. We see a film as just a film- one whole thing, but when making the film, this one single film is broken down into bits and pieces. Different trained people then work on their own allocated area of the film. And finally a lot of hard work, effort and thinking of people comes out as one film for us watch. Similarly, ‘The Sandman’ also has blocks to it, which join like a jigsaw puzzle to make what we know as ‘The Sandman’. The creators of ‘The Sandman’ had to think about lots of different techniques and use them effectively to create meaning and influence on the audience’s reaction. The first important building block to this film produced by Colin Batty, Paul Berry and Ian Mackinnon is the effects of Sound. Sound techniques are used in many different films and in many different ways to create special effects on the audience. For example when some very melodious, happy tune is played, it gives the audience a feeling of a happy atmosphere and a happy general feel about the movie. Similarly ‘The Sandman’ also uses sound techniques. There are two types of sounds-diagetic and non-diagetic. A diagetic sound is a sound that belongs to the world of the film and a Non-Diagetic sound is a sound that is added to it, which doesn’t necessarily belong to the film. For example an existent song being played in a movie would be a non-diagetic sound, but a sound made by the sandman for example, that has specially been created to be played as the sandman’s voice would be diagetic because it is specially designed for the movie. For example the sound made when the sandman flaps his arms backwards and forward is diagetic because it has been created for that special purpose. This exists just in the world of the film because in real life sounds aren’t made when people try to flap their arms as if they are wings- and even if there are, they
