Approx. 2000 Words INTRODUCTION New Information Technology (NIT) defined as any “web based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of other users whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system” (Boyd & Ellison 2008) This new media, thriving on the internet, has usurped to an extent, powers that hitherto belonged to traditional media namely electronic and print media and is regarded as the fastest growing mode of communication easily gaining acceptance across the globe. This essay will explore the extent to which these new information technologies have undermined the traditional divisions of media communication face-to-face communication. It will be opined that traditional media has at least lost a portion of its audiences to these new phenomena while face-to-face communication on the other hand improves by adapting to these technology based systems. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), one third of the world population are online, 45% of those are internet users of below the age of 25 years. Mobile-cellular subscriptions reached almost 6 billion by end of 2011, a global penetration of 86%. It is exciting to note that this growth was driven by developing countries accounting to more than 80% of the 660 million new mobile‐cellular subscriptions added in 2011. More so, the young generations are the ones using the internet more. This means that in the near future, we will witness more generation connected to the online world network.
