How far do you agree that the first world war caused the abdication of the Tsar While the first world war was a large reason as to why the Tsar abdicated on march 15th 1917, there were other reasons such as the lack of political reform and the state of Russia before the war. However, the war, and his actions due to this, was the largest reason for the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. Russia, while beginning the war with victories against Austria - Hungary and pressing into Prussia, old lingering problems soon caught up with the country caught in patriotic zeal. There were four main reasons as to why the war contributed to the fall of the Romanov dynasty. Firstly the lack of agricultural workers and horses to tend the fields as well as the takeover of the transport system by the military, hindered the food production of Russia. While Moscow was receiving 2,200 rail-carts of grain, however by 1916, only 300 carts were able to enter the city. This means that there was little food to go around, and when rumours of food cuts to already strained rations, turn to riots, in which the February revolution started. Secondly , the war crippled the Russian economy. Taking loans from Britain and France, as well as dropping the gold standard so as to print money (Robles), inflation was bound to rise. In the beginning it was not too bad, only small price rises, however as the war progressed, inflation rose drastically, with prices rising 200% between august 1914 to December 1916. This prevented the Russian population from being able to buy common necessities, and as such, workers called general strikes is areas such as Petrograd, which was part of the February revolution.
