How does the National Institutes of Health promote the well being of not just Americans but people worldwide? What is and how does the Federal Grant Funding Program function to promote scientific research? Did our country become a world leader in science because of our unique approach to the organization of our country set forth by our constitution? How does the National Institutes of Health promote the well being of not just Americans but people worldwide? The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , is the nation’s medical research agency making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. The NIH claims due to its medical research Americans are now living longer and healthier. The NIH states on its main webpage the US has gone from a life expectancy of 47 years in the year 1900 to a life expectancy of 78 years in 2009. (National institute of health) The Constitution makes organizations such as the NIH possible because of the Article I which is the Freedom of Speech and Press which allows for scientists and researchers to research and post their discoveries and findings without fear of repercussion from state or religious groups. (The United States Constitution) Without the freedom of speech and press we enjoy in this country the NIH would not be nearly as successful as it is now because the finding they publish are allowed to be studied and implemented by all. The private sector of science and medicines uses these published findings to create job and improve quality of life. This ability to improve quality of life is done by promoting wellness which in turn increases longevity of life. The benefits of the NIH publishing its findings to the world so all scientists may use them has given scientists and medical professional the ability to affect the way we see health of ourselves
