Believing sexism will go away without putting major changes in place, is not a reality. Sexism blatantly exists in the work place. Obvious (and most common) examples of this would be: women are often paid less than their male counterparts for the same position, men often receive rapid job promotions in comparison to women and women are usually the targets of gender based harassment. Women frequently struggle with the lack of pay they receive, in comparison to their male counterparts. A woman working in the same job as a man will usually earn less, despite the fact that she may have the same or better training, education, and skills required for the job ("Study Shows Female Managers in Britain Earn Less than Men, and Equality Could Be 57 Years Away."
It's easy to see why Rich believes that when she was a student, what she was taught "in no way prepared [female students] to survive as . . .wom[e]n in a world organized by men" (211). In my opinion, not a lot of women around this age would have been brave enough to write an article about taking women students serious for fear of oppression. Many women probably did not even know how to write because their were neglected from their studies or were probably always to busy doing what ever their husbands wanted them to do.

This quote is important because it shows that people were a little disapproving of David’s left-handedness because it was odd or unusual. So people would be disapproving of a deviation. Women are often treated like they are less then the men and its there fault the blasphemies are created. Women don’t get to do much other then work in the home, they are not permitted to go out in to the fields and they have to stay home and do housework. Sexism does still exist in the workplace today, not only for women but for men too, although modern day sexism is less obvious, more subtle, and harder to put your finger on. The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (amended in 1991) prohibits an employer from discriminating with respect to compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (Wiener, 2010). Women have always struggled with sexism since women first began to join the workforce. When women were starting to work in similar jobs as men, they were being paid significantly less than their male counterparts were. “In the article Complainant behavioral tone, ambivalent sexism, and perceptions of sexual harassment” it seeks to point out recent changes to these laws to help place what is sexual harassment.
However, some women joined the work force and would do jobs that men previously had held. Some were not forced to, but they had to work as hard as they could to support their families during this difficult time. In contrast, the writer Norman Cousins commented that there was a negative opinion on the women’s presence in the workforce despite women willing to acquire a living wage. He also stated in his book that the federal government proscribed holding government jobs by both members of a married couple, and many localities stopped hiring women whose husbands with a minimum wage (Cousins 1939). Another aspect of the Depression affecting life of women was the moral argument against working-women.
Being a Daoist Priestess shows us that men weren’t the only type of human beings able to hold a place of power. By women obtaining property shows us that women could work for themselves and were independent from men. During this time women were quite happy with their rights, but the smile will soon be wiped off their faces because their rights just keep dwindling down to nothing. During the middle or end of the Tang dynasty and beginning of the Song dynasty women’s rights were at there “peak” and started to decline slowly. The Tang dynasty declined due to loss of communication throughout the empire, generals and officials gaining too much power, and revolts causing the empire to be weak and open for attack.
Therefore, like an ignorant individual, I assumed that my living was the standard of living of everyone else’s. I had many richer friends, which also made me think that my standard of living was average. However, thinking critically, there are tons of people who do not have the means or the grades to go to an educational level beyond high school and therefore receive minimum wage jobs without a good opportunity for promotion because those will be handed to people with the higher educational people. Also, that leaves very little room to improve the condition of living that you find yourself in. Therefore most of the times you will find yourself marrying an individual of the same economic class due the nature that nobody wants to date someone of lower class as you.
These cultures see women as only able to do house work and not big things like being a doctor, engineer, business owner, etc… this is very wrong because women are now taking over many of the big jobs out there. The Mirikitani wrote on her poem “If only I were a son” showing that the girl was a victim of this type of behavior being demonstrated by he parents. (377). The girl that is being portrayed in this poem must have thought that being a girl wasn’t a good thing. The parents of the girl who wrote this poem are possibly part of this group, resulting in the girl herself believing that she is inferior to men.
There are currently two laws that protect against wage discrimination, The Equal Pay Act of 1963, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits wage discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion or national origin. Pay equity is a benefit for everyone. Most women and people of color are still segregated into a small number of jobs like service workers, nurses, and teachers. These jobs have been undervalued and continue to be under paid because of the gender and race of the people who hold them. The law itself was considered to be weak because it only mandated that women doing work equal not comparable to men be paid the same as men.
