She has faith in the integrity of the people in her community. Scout is also very considerate. One form of her consideration is shown when she speaks of the equality between black and white people. “I think there’s just one type of folk, folk.’ Her father is her role model and she would do anything to make him proud. This is shown most strongly when people form school start making racial and discriminative comments towards the Finch family.
It is shown through more then one person and act. Courage is doing something you are afraid of, as Atticus teaches Scout and Jem, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (112). This quote is in reference to Mrs. Dubose overcoming her addiction to morphine so she would die “beholden to nothing and nobody”. Atticus tells his children about Mrs. Dubose being “the bravest woman he has ever met”. She exemplifies moral courage, as she neglected her own personal suffering to follow her own
In the novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, society is supposed to be a perfect place where everyone lives by a set of rules which are not to be broken, and everyone has accepted the concept of “we” rather than “I”. Everyone has their job chosen for them and everyone is equal. In this novel, the two main characters, Equality 7-2521 and the Golden One fall in love with one another and develop feelings for each other. The love that these two share violates the fundamental beliefs that their society believes in by them developing feelings, ideas, and self sufficiency which is what their society is against. The first reason I feel that their love violates their society’s beliefs is because in this society, everyone has a tight schedule of what to do and when to do it.
Atticus’s traits of tolerance and open mindedness persuade us to base our lifestyle on rectitude. Throughout this controversial novel, readers can distinguish Atticus as an open-minded being. Atticus tells Scout to “consider things from [Ms. Caroline’s] point of view” (Lee 138) when Scout gets into trouble by Ms. Caroline for no apparent reason that Scout can comprehend. Atticus sees beyond Scout’s opinion and shows his great insight by realizing that there had to be a good reason why Ms. Caroline decided to reprimand Scout. He teaches Scout to look in Ms. Caroline’s point of view to better understand why she acted that way.
Scout is intelligent and sees things with a mind that has not been corrupted by others. A theme of this story is not to judge a person by his or her skin color. Scout Finch shows bravery throughout the book. Her father, Atticus, tells her to take the high road and not to engage in any fighting if someone says something hurtful. So when a classmate of hers insults her father it takes every ounce of her will power to walk away, “I drew
Readers can learn to follow the examples of the good parent and they can now avoid doing bad things to their own children. Atticus and Calpurnia had done their part as great parents and surely Jem and Scout would grow up to be good parents themselves. But for Bob Ewell, his children would probably grow up thinking that what their father did to them was a good act and they will follow his examples, thus making them bad parents and bad examples for their future children. A good parent will never let their children be astray from the right path and will always try to teach them the right ways and how to be good parents themselves in the
Harper Lee conveys the message that empathy is essential for a clear foundation of equality develop in society through the characterization of Atticus Finch. When an individual has a deep sense of empathy he is more likely to share the wisdom that is bestowed on him, with having such empathy. This is illustrated when the author portrays Atticus’s strong belief in the importance of empathy as he continuously works to instill empathy into Scout. After Scout returns from a tiresome day of school and complains about her woes Atticus advises her that ‘“You never really understand a person until you consider his point of view’” (Lee 39). Atticus is telling Scout that although the people you meet may seem unreasonable or unusually cruel it is unfair to judge them until you have
Rather than being a hindrance to Maria’s social and spiritual development, this bold and assertive personality translated into the development of the young girl’s own bold, self-confident personality and leadership skills that would serve her greatly in later years. His authoritative parenting techniques (which included public denouncement of Maria’s choice to continue schooling in a scientific field) also allowed Maria to explore and develop one of her key ideologies for the classroom: the freedom of choice within a framework. As a military family, the Montessoris moved frequently as well, exposing young Maria to different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds and fostering a strong belief in equality and cooperation’s role in overall peace. Her mother, however, was a liberal, religious and feminist woman who

Trusted leaders, first and foremost, are those whose actions match their words. In the same way children emulate what parents do more than what they say, employees look to see if the actions of their leaders align with their words. Keeping words and actions in lock step builds trust and credibility like nothing else. (Covey, 2006) The textbook has discussed many leadership styles with interesting descriptions: The Benevolent Dictator, Rah-Rah Type, Open Book Manager, Theory X, Theory Y, Autocrat, and Team Builder, for example. They all offer certain positives and negatives regarding successful leadership.
