How far do you agree with each of these critical opinions. How do you view the character of Polonius? Seemingly Polonius is open to a variety of interpretations. One the one hand he is a cautious father and a devoted, harmless courtier; on the other hand you may perceive him as sneaky, manipulative and malicious. Further, according to Hamlet, he is a ‘foolish, prating knave’ (act iii scene 4). This perception of Hamlet sees Polonius as incompetent and devious. Considering these aspects it seems to me that essentially, the character of Polonius demonstrates the self -serving nature of political intrigue. He grovels at the foot of royal supremacy and uses his family as tools to gain respect from the King and Queen. Polonius disregards Ophelia’s love for Hamlet and instead fears for his own reputation. He discounts her emotional well being in order to avoid the risk of her seduction, which would result in his shame. This is clear in act 1 scene 3 where he says: ‘… Tender yourself more dearly; Or not to crack the wind of the poor phrase, Roaming it thus, you’ll tender me a fool’ Polonius uses monetary imagery to strengthen his edict to Ophelia. He puns on the word ‘tenders’. Tenderness refers to gentle love yet he implies ‘offers’, in which mocks her affections and suggests prostitution. This reflects his devalued attitude towards woman and his cynical approach to love. This cynicism evinced by Polonius extends to all aspects of relationships. We see his overt caution to all humanity whilst he advises his son Laertes. Polonius gives warning to him not ever to speak openly; he counsels him to: ‘Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportion’d
