The Destructors by Graham Green was set in the 1950's (post war) it portrays a young youth gang who construct a plan to dismantle an iconic house in their neighbourhood. The can be seen to represent the upper class, surviving the war when the surrounding houses got destroyed in the Blitz. The post war anger is a theme that is present throughout. The Custody of the Pumpkin is a humorous short story containing strong satire mocking the divide in the social class systems in the late 19th Century. Lord Emsworth the protagonist in the story, he represents the upper class from a prejudiced point of view. The Destructors shows a fragile house to stick out like a "jagged tooth". Imagery of an eye saw is created implying to the reader the house is not wanted. The language here is negative to the house reminding the reader of the houses position in the story. The youth gang seemed puzzled by their new leader's idea. Trevor, who seems to come from a middle class background, shows more intelligence and maturity than the others. Evidence from the text such as his father was an 'architect' as well as is upper class name, both provides backing for his middle or upper class upbringing. Unlike the other gang members who show a more jealous view to 'Old misery', wanting to steal. Trevor persuades against this by instructing that they will take nothing and will dismantle the building piece by piece. He we can explore the deep meaning of the act. Trevor firmly believes the house is standing as the upper class and his dismantling of it will tear down social class hierarchy in the area. I believe Trevor is trying to erase his past, an underlying theme throughout and one which other gang members do not understand.
