How did the USA resist soviet expansionism? * -Cointainment (Truman doctrine) * -Sending military advisors to governments facing threats from communism. * -Atomic bombs * -Economic plans such as Marshall plan to recover the prosperity of europe to lessen the spread of communism. * -Propaganda. * -Domino theory - USA tried to keep the next domino from falling. Korea. Nam. Berlin airlift. Cuba. * -But ultimately the single most effective thing the USA did was stay the course and let the free market develop and produce a consumer economy that had the Russian black market thriving by dealing simple things like blue jeans. * -They reacted by trying to also spread democracy. * -Soviet expansion in Europe was met by organising a military pact, NATO. * -the russians called it "economic imperialism", the marshell plan the truman doctrine, just pumping money into any country that had any fear of a communist take over to stop the domino effect, they did this all over the world, but you can see it mainly in europe, although these friendly loans really set africa progress back quite alot and crippled many a country. * -The USA used stopping Soviet expansion as an excuse for what they did across the world. But as soon as the USSR fell, they continued to expand, even though there wasn't a USSR to "contain." The US military has around 700 military bases around the world. The USSR didn't even have 100 military bases. * The USA interpreted the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe as the start of an attempt to spread communism around the world * The USA’s immediate worry was that Greece and Turkey might be the next countries to fall to Stalin. When Britain said it could no longer afford to station troops in these countries, Truman decided to act. * On May 12 March 1947, Truman announced that the USA would give support to any free peoples
