The Revolutionary War The war between the British and the Americans had already been going on for 5 years when the British decided to take another approach and move down south. The British realized they could not defeat the colonies in the north and kept racking up debt. “For England it has expanded into a world war with her arch enemy, France. British colonies around the world are under attack and France seems poise to invade England itself” (The World Turned Upside Down). The British armies were now stationed in many different places and not focusing all their power in one place which may be part of the reason for such failure in the north. This success brought more loyalists to submit their loyalty to England. Their initial plan was to “conquer an area and put loyalists in charge” (The World Turned Upside Down). The British soon realized that the Loyalists were mainly focused on getting revenge against the colonists who sided with the Continental Congress. This resulted in much violence, destruction and thousands of deaths. Although this win for the British was not long lived. They soon went on a downhill struggle, which led to the end of the war. The battle of Saratoga was a big turning point in the war. “A British army of nearly 7,000 surrendered today to a combined force of American militia and Continental regulars.” (Liberty site). This victory had convinced the French to join an alliance with America. This alliance with the French supplied the colonists with weapons, gunpowder and even uniforms. “The entry of the French tied down the British in other parts of the world and also brought America more than $8 million in aid.” (Oakes 194).
