How Did The Fab Five Affect Social Behavior?

In college basketball, alley oops, fancy no-look passes, and trash talking, these are just some of the things we are accustomed to in the game of basketball today. Before 1992 though, it was all about making the simple plays just to get the ball in the hoop. Also, the custom attire for this generation of basketball is long shorts that go to your knees and generally most people wear high black socks. Before 1992, most people wore short shorts and high white socks instead of black socks. What caused these changes to take place in 1992 you may ask? Well it was a basketball group of kids called the Fab Five at the University of Michigan. These 5 kids brought their own “swagger” or style to the court and didn’t care how people viewed them. Because of this, they would go on to change college basketball forever in both the way people played and the attire of the game. It was the year 1991 and the Michigan Wolverines had just signed 5 ESPN top 100 high school seniors or recruits. This class of players is considered to many the greatest recruiting class of all time, considering that 4 of the 5 recruits were in the top 10. The Fab Five movement and the things they were doing were creating some uncertainty among people so some reaction had to be made. Some people conformed to their ways and began to implement their ways into their game. This collective behavior could be classified as a fashion. People began to dress differently because of them and act differently on the court. People also began to buy their apparel, such as t-shirts saying Fab Five or high black socks or began to make their shorts longer. This fashion would soon evolve to where everyone would dress the same and this was the major change they brought to the basketball
