This translated to the military machine as well. Blacks were not mixed with whites in units. Black soldiers could serve under a white commander, but whites never served under a black commander. This all changed in 1940, and helped to pave the way for equality. Under the pressure of activist groups and President Franklin Roosevelt, the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), who had not allowed black Americans entrance into its academy, finally gave in and allowed blacks to enroll for the flight program.
GLORY The film is based on the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry that was made up entirely of African American men which was the first of its kind. The story is told through the eyes of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who was the unit’s commanding officer during the American Civil War. Colonel Shaw was the main character who displayed all the qualities of an effective leader that we discussed in class. If I had to describe what type of leader Colonel Shaw was I would describe him as a transformational leader. Transformational leaders are under the assumption that people will follow them because their inspiring.
Even though Ritz wasn’t really racist by the standards of the 1930’s his language would draw some pretty negative attention in today’s society. For example Ritz once told Davidson “You know what, Davidson, it’s too damn bad you’re not a white boy. If you were a white boy, you would really have it made.” This gave Davidson a dose of reality; he knew that in order to achieve his dreams he would have to work harder than anyone else. Davidson eventually got a job at a small airport rubbing clay on aircraft for when it rained and one day a man named Charlie Smallwood, an African-American flight instructor from Tuskegee, Alabama, came by to rent an airplane. Davidson talks about how shocked the locals at the airport were to see a black man trying to rent a plane, luckily for Smallwood, and eventually Davidson, the instructor at this airport was a visionary who saw past Smallwood’s color and after putting him through the proper procedure rented him a plane.
He was the most courageous and dedicated leader during the civil rights struggle, and his leadership impacted millions. King spoke for African-American and helped to conquer discrimination based on race and skin color. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech will be remembered by Americans for many generations, and overall, he impacted the nation in more ways than words can describe. His courage to fight for what he believed in is one of the many reasons why the United States government created a national holiday in his honor. African-American and white units, but the U.S. Army Air Corp simply didn’t accepted any colored pilots because the colored men were believed they had lower intelligence, worse coordination, and slower reflexes. Urged by President Roosevelt, who wanted to win African-American support while running for his second term, the U.S. Air Corps conducted an experiment that consisted of giving an assemblage of young African-American men equal opportunities as their white pilots to test if colored men could become competent pilots who eventually became the Tuskegee Airmen (Homen). The soon to be pilots trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, “hence the nickname, to become the first colored American pilots” (PBS). The first non-white aviation cadets began training in July 1941 and finished in March 1942, with five out of thirteen successfully completing the course soon enough nine hundred and ninety-four African American pilots graduated from the training throughout 1946 (Homen).
His leadership has made him seem one step ahead of both allies and competitors, which has given people the confidence to trust his leadership for many important roles he has been appointed in. In an interview with Oren Harari, Colin Powell stated his 18 principles for great leadership which applies to his success and when asked what you need for success, in two words he replied “hard work” showing his determination in any task at hand. Even after he retired he has still maintained his leadership to help others especially through the United Nations. His determination has leaded him to become one of the greatest African American icons of our time and deserves this respect and

This diverse and courageous group consisted of not only African and Hispanic Americans it included a cross section of religious leaders and university students. He was known as the “Black Menace” and was born in Galveston, Texas. Johnson was America’s first black Heavyweight champion. People often saw his job not only as a boxer but pissing off white people. He was very well-rounded boxer that loved fast cars, fancy suits, and white women. After the fight against Tommy Burns that gave him his title as the heavyweight champion, he became a hero to the blacks suffering under slavery.
During the existence of segregation laws, African Americans lived poor lives. The laws limited them to such things as their choice of schools, the available jobs, which places they could occupy in public, and voting privileges. These limitations made it apparent that African Americans were not viewed as equal, nor were they shown any respect.
