Whitney Eicher May 3, 2011 Period 11 Adolf Hitler is known for his actions in central leadership role in the rise of fascism in Europe, World War II and the Holocaust. Hitler is resposible for the deaths of over 11 million people. Hitler was feared by many throughout his lifetime. He made a huge impact during his lifetime, but not in the best way. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th, 1889 in the small town Braunau near the German border. His father was Alois Hitler and his mother was Klara Hitler. They had five children together, but only two survived. Adolf and his sister Paula were the only children that made it to adulthood. Alois worked as a customs officer on the border crossing. The outbreak of the first World War provided him with an opportunity for a fresh start. It was a chance for him to become involved in proving that Germany was superior to other European countries. Rejecting the idea of fighting for Austria, Hitler volunteered for the German army and was accepted into the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment. Hitler fought bravely in the war and was promoted to corporal and decorated with both the Iron Cross Second Class and First Class, the latter of which he wore until his dying day [ironically the regimental captain who recommended him for the award was Jewish]. Adolf Hitler was then hospitalized with temporary blindness from a British gas attack. He returned to his regiment in a short time. Hitler was beginning to realize he wanted to be a leader and believed he could be a great one. In February 1920 he organized a much larger event for a crowd of nearly two thousand. he succeeded in calming a rowdy audience and presented a twenty-five point program of ideas which were to be the basis of the party. The name of the party was itself changed to the National Socialist German Workers Party (or Nazi for short) on April 1st,
