The Internet is relatively new to people. It “is a global system which is a collection of more than 48,000 interconnected computer networks. It arguably began in the 19th Century with the invention of the telegraph system, and its modern history started in the 1950s and 1960s with the development of computers” (Chester and Rosenfeld 20), but the Internet has both benefits and dangers. Have you ever counted how many times you use the Internet in a day? It seems that people can do virtually anything on the Internet, from shopping and reading news to chatting with friends. Most people use the Internet for work, study, and news. However, many are blinded by all the benefits of the Internet and fail to notice any of the problems that can come from overuse or dangerous content (“What is”). Although it has these many benefits, the Internet is dangerous because of networks that lack parental controls, increasing amounts of predators preying on young people, and plagiarism by students. Most parents complain and worry that they cannot control their children’s Internet use. In addition, they agree that the more time their children spend using their Internet the more they lose contact with their family and social environment. This effect is noticeable even with just two to five Internet hours per day; and it rises substantially for those spending more than 10 hours per week, of whom up to 15 percent report a decrease in social activities (Barrett). A key finding of the using Internet is the less time they spend with real human beings. A quarter of the respondents who use the Internet regularly (more than five hours a week) feel that it has reduced their time with friends and family or attendance at events outside the home (Barrett).
