Cockroaches live in a wide range of environments around the world, from the north to the south, and from the east to the west. Therefore, it is very common for us to see them in different areas. As we all know, there are about 4,500 species of cockroach, of which about 30 species are associated with human habitations and about four species are well known as pests. However, why they are so successful? In the following paragraphs, I shall discuss the reasons of this matter in aspects of morphology, mode of nutrition, reproduction and evolution. Morphology About the morphology of the cockroaches, there are several points that can be discussed. First of all, there are over 50% of the volume of its body is fat. This is a very important point as this can not only can be used as the protection to its organs, but also can become their food reservation for over several weeks. Also, it has a waxy skeleton like ants and this means that it is not easily killed by hitting or pressing; and the skeleton at the same time become the restriction in the growth of their body as the bigger of their body, the more oxygen required. This helps them to survive in some extreme cases like small spaces that nearly no air can come into. Mode of nutrition Cockroaches are omnivorous animals, and the most favourite food of cockroaches are starch and meat. In extreme cases, cockroaches can even eat newspapers, books and CDs. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food, and some even have been known to live up to three months without food and a month without water. The only food that cockroaches never eat is cucumber. Therefore, we can see that it almost eat anything is organic.
