Charlie Bucket is from a poor family and lives in a rickety house in London. Aside from that, Tim Burton’s uses lighting in the setting and Camera Angles to create emotion to convey what the character feel inside in contrast to their surroundings. To create emotions in Burton’s films, he uses high key lighting to make a place look bright and open. During a scene in Edward Scissorhands, Burton purposely put high key lighting to make the shopping center bright making you convey a feeling of happiness and amazement for Edward. Likewise in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, low key lighting is shown when Willy Wonka is talking about the factory to the kids and their parents.

Max’s father takes him to an old woman’s home, where they are intruders, and then to the filthy basement of a burned-out building.
The movie is just worth watching just to see the character come to life through her. But James Caan, who plays Paul Sheldon was so generic he seemed invisible. The film also fails to capture the feeling that Paul is not in control. In the book, Paul is very insidious in defying Wilkes. He sneaks out of his room multiple times, hides extra pills, he also stashes food to prepare for Annie’s next mood swing.
