How Can Alternative Sources of Energy be Harnessed Effectively? In this age of energy shortage, alternative resources, which are expected to solve the problem of both a shortage of resources and environmental pollution, have been paid more and more attention than ever before. There are many kinds of alternative sources of energy that are changing our life gradually, such as solar energy, wind energy, nuclear energy, tidal energy, hydroelectric energy etc. In order to use these alternative sources effectively, it is necessary to come up with some valid solutions. In this essay, some solutions including, widening the use of the alternative resources all over the world, introducing government policies, and encouraging R&D will be discussed, together with the limitations and drawbacks of these approaches. Many existing technologies have not been used widely in people's lives widely. For instance, windmills do not produce any waste or greenhouse gases, and thousands of windmills are being used throughout the Netherlands. Therefore, windmills have already become a symbol of Holland. However windmills still do not serves as an essential means of generating electricity in the world. The number of coal-fired power plants might be reduced if the windmills used more in other countries. Nevertheless, this is easier said than done because harnessing the wind is highly dependent upon the location and climate. Choosing an appropriate place where there is enough wind to install a windmill is a limitation of this technology. Without a doubt, the practical example set by Kristianstad is another good case. Kristianstad, which is in Sweden, uses biological waste such as potato peels, manure, used cooking oil, stale cookies and pig intestines to generate energy. Its sources also include old landfills and sewage ponds, as well as wood waste from flooring factories and tree pruning
