How accurate is it to say Martin Luther King was a successful leader in the civil rights movement? It is accurate to say Martin Luther King was successful to a large extent because of factors such as, his philosophy, his determination and courage and character traits. However his leadership skills can be limited because of the failed campaigns such as Birmingham. The biggest reason he was a successful leader would be his philosophy and the smallest reason behind his success would be his determination. Firstly, his character traits including his oratory skills, his Nobel Peace Prize and his famous I Have A Dream speech were instrumental in his success as the face of the Civil Rights campaign. His oratory skills was the key component that got Martin Luther King famous, when he moved to Montgomery it was this skill that got him to the top so quickly. These made him a successful leader because it allowed him to motivationally communicate with his fellow African American followers. An example of great motivation in his speech would be his ‘I Have a Dream Speech’ at the March on Washington in 1963, this was his most famous speech, he spoke to at least 250,000 supporters and motivated them completely and got the civil rights act that followed was a true reminder of his skill. However his leadership skills were strained when it came to the Birmingham, Alabama protest that was a huge disappointment. It really did show what can happen if he didn’t organise his plan and didn’t have time to use is oratory skills. It also shows that he is a one trick pony and can only be a success if his oratory skills are in place. This shows that the question is correct to a huge extent because his oratory skills were such a big facror in the creation of the civil rights act and the motivation of a whole community, however this is his only skill and when that’s not in place the whole
