“I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One that I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it” says Esperanza, the protagonist in the story House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, after she gets embarrassed for showing the nun where she lives (5). Esperanza is a young woman who has many goals which includes finding a nicer house, but the biggest one is to “escape” Mango Street. Inside the lonely and forgotten houses on Mango Street, many women are not able to leave because they are trapped. However, Esperanza’s future will not end up like the lives of the women on Mango Street because she is educated and observant. Esperanza is lucky because she is well educated. She attends a Catholic High school for which she helps pay tuition. She uses her education in her daily life when she were jumping rope with her friends Rachel and Lucy and her sister Nenny, Esperanza identifies the clouds by their scientific name. “That up there, thats a cumulus, and everybody looks up” comments Esperanza. (36). She can also seen correcting the grammar. When Lucy is introducing herself and her sister, Esperanza shows off her knowledge. “We come from Texas, Lucy says and grins. Her was born here but I’m Texas. You mean she, I say. No I’m from Texas and doesn’t get it” (15). Esperanza’s knowledge of grammar showcases her education. This convenient attribute will take her far in life. Her education is the key to escaping Mango Street. In addition to Esperanza’s education, her ability to be observant will help her escape Mango Street. She is observant of every woman who is caught in the spider web of Mango Street. She observes how Rafaela is trapped. Her husband is so paranoid that if she leaves the house she might find someone else. “Rafaela who drinks and drinks coconut and papaya juice on Tuesdays wishes there were sweeter drinks, not bitter
