Case Study: Honda and Hybrid Electric Vehicles 1. Are hybrid electrical vehicles a radical innovation or an incremental innovation? Are they competence enhancing or competence destroying, and from whose perspective? How would you answer these questions for fuel cells vehicles? Firstly talking about radical innovation and incremental innovation. Coming up with a new idea/innovation totally deviating from the existing product is radical innovation. Example: IPod, IPhone etc. Developing and adding changes to the existing product is Incremental Innovation. Example: IOS 7, Lion OSX, Windows 8 etc. In this case Hybrid system was not a new idea (Toyota was the first to implement and develop the hybrid system). But the way the systems were operated was different in both the companies. The design was not entirely different as it was based on the previous designs and the use of gasoline is also seen. So with the above reasons this type of innovation would be more of an Incremental innovation that radical innovation. In the perspective of customers and some companies who support the concept of hybrid vehicles, they are competence enhancing while in other perspective of those companies who are not supporting the concept of hybrid vehicles, they are competence destroying. In the case of Fuel cells the idea was completely new. The use of fossil fuels would differ with the implementation of fuel cells. It is a new system and is not based on any preexisting or prebuilt systems. So this would be a radical innovation. From the perspective of the companies who make the batteries and the customers who want to save more money, they are competence enhancing. However, from the perspective of the companies involved with the production of petroleum and who do not support the concept of fuel cell vehicles, they are competence destroying. 2. Are hybrid
