Good afternoon Mr. Smith, my name is Brittnee and I am the education nurse that is going to explain to you about your diagnosis of hypertension.   Hypertension is very common in people over the age of 50 and can be either an elevation of your systolic or top number or an elevation of your diastolic or bottom number.   Hypertension can be defined as a top number of 140 or greater or a bottom number 90 or greater.   Hypertension occurs in your cardiovascular system, or your heart.   In your case and according to your age, you have a high systolic number.   This means that the arteries in your heart are stiffing which is causing your heart to work harder while pumping the blood through your body.   When you have a stiffing of your arteries, this can affect many areas of your body.   If there not enough blood is getting through, then your brain could suffer due to lack of blood being able to get to it.   There is also something called homeostasis that happens in your body.   This is where changes in your body help you to deal with all the physical changes that happen outside your body.   In the case of hypertension, if your heart is constantly over working itself and you are not adequately controlling your blood pressure, this can cause you to have a heart attack or cardiac arrest, which is death.
