3) National reports estimate that veterans compose between 24% to 40% of the homeless population. Many of these veterans are homeless due to the general causes of homeless, but it is believed that an additional reason is due to the long-term effects of untreated Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (National Coalition for Homeless, 2008b). Although the majority of homeless individuals are men, women and children are becoming homeless at a disturbing increasing rate. Some of the general causes of homelessness such as affordable housing and poor access to support networks are especially challenging for women and children experiencing domestic violence, who are estimated to comprise of between 46% to 92% of homeless
This fact seems to remind us of the continuing importance of social and economic determinants of health. There is a little doubt about the low standards of living and persistence of absolute poverty in the developing world is the key that determines the health in our society. Infant mortality rate is the most used indicator of the general health and well-being of population as a whole. The black report on Inequalities in health care was introduced by the Department of health in the UK by Health Minister, David Ennals in 1977. It wanted to point out why the NHS had failed to reduce social inequalities in health and to investigate the problems.
Persistent stress from poverty and racism was reported, which creates health risks through physiologic pathways. In order to provide a clear connection to the far-reaching effects of poverty and racism on the social determinants of health, Ecological Theory was used. This theory seems a very broad and complex one and lends itself well to various interpretations accordingly. The authors point out that the version used here is that developed by Sweat and Denison. This iteration has been adapted from the original five stages initially conceptualized by Bronfenbrenner.
Determining the amount of homeless individuals in any given area can be a difficult task and statistics very dependent on the source. It has been estimated that in the Kansas City Metro Area there are from 750 to 1000 homeless people living on the streets and anywhere between 12,000 to 24,000 living in shelters and other temporary residences (City Data, n.d.). Regardless of the statistics, mentally ill individuals make up a large number of the homeless and are now in more contact with the general public (James & Gilliland, 2013). Due to the physical and fiscal limitations in establishing the required workforce and facilities to handle this growing problem crisis intervention teams (CIT) have been created. The CIT program is proactive and preventative and is used to confront dangerous situations involving the mentally ill (James & Gilliland).
January 7, 2015 Extreme Cold Weather Services for Homeless People Homeless people are the population most at risk for frost bite and hypothermia from cold weather conditions according to Environment Canada. Council's policy is that the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) calls an Extreme Cold Weather Alert when Environment Canada forecasts that the overnight temperature will reach -15 or colder in the City of Toronto. He can also call an Alert at warmer temperatures when the official weather forecast includes factors that increase the impact of cold weather on health, such as wind chill, precipitation, low daytime temperatures, or several days and nights of cold weather in a row. When an Extreme Cold Weather Alert is called by the
Homelessness in the United State has been a radical issue that has been affecting our society in general. It has been a complicating situation that has been dramatically rising among us. Stuart D. Bykofsky, in “No Heart for the Homeless,” Anna Quindlen, in “Rooms of Their Own,” and Steven VanderStaay, in “Solutions Homeless People Seek,” has distinguished solutions that the government can accomplish to assist the homeless. The three essays have similar views on solutions that can be accomplished to solve the homelessness issue. In the essays, Bykofsky and Quindlen discusses the problems that individuals seek when the homeless surrounds the streets and deprive them from having a clean environment.
Seismic events prove that it is a problematic for the world's population and produce devastating effects on the lives of everyone involved. However it is often said that LEDCs suffer much more from the effects of earthquakes than MEDCs. Whilst this is a generalisation it is probably true, at least in terms of the human cost. Poverty is the condition of lacking basic human needs such as nutrition, clean water, health care, clothing, and shelter because of the inability to afford them. There are several levels of poverty from an individual to national level and earthquake disasters impact at all levels.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the determinants of health include: the social and economic environment, the physical environment, and the person’s individual characteristics and behaviors. These determinants—or things that make people healthy or not—include the above factors, and many others: • Income and social status - higher income and social status are linked to better health. The greater the gap between the richest and poorest people, the greater the differences in health. • Education – low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower self-confidence. • Physical environment – safe water and clean air, healthy workplaces, safe houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health.
Patient Safety According to Weeks W.B. et al (2000), each day, far too many patients are harmed unnecessarily through their interaction with the healthcare system. It is then that the measures of institutional safety in healthcare are declining and thus considered that receiving medical care is risky. In fact, “frequency of fatal outcomes in medical care is estimated to exceed those from motor vehicle accidents” Weeks W.B. et al (2000).
The causes of homelessness in America can be classified in to two broad categories, which are: (1) individual shortcomings and (2) societal issues. Individual shortcomings include mental illnesses, family breakdown, addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, lack of education, and amoral behavior. On the other hand, societal issues relate to interrelated social, political and economic factors which include joblessness, distribution of income and wealth and the profit structure of the housing market. People in America are vulnerable to getting homeless irrespective of their educational and ethnic backgrounds. Many studies have found that the homeless population has reached to the figure of 4 million in America that has altered the image of the homeless people as being beggars, hobos and winos.
