Homelessness in America By Michelle A. Levels Instructor Cecil Clifton Course SOCI 111 September 11, 2012 Homelessness in America Approximately 1.5 million children in America are homeless. My opinion is there is little excuse for this because we as Americans have many opportunities to succeed in life. I have been in this situation myself and I fought my way back with the help of many city and government programs. One of the programs in Evansville In is Aurora. They assist in getting families off the streets and into affordable housing. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines a homeless person for the purpose of identifying qualified service recipients as "A person sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation or in an emergency shelter; a person in transitional or supportive housing for homeless persons who originally came from the street or an emergency shelter." (Aurora representative, Evansville Courier-press, 2011). Aurora provides services directly to people who are homeless through a continuum of care. (America’s Youngest Outcasts: State Report Card on Child Homelessness describes the plight of America’s homeless children.) For the first time, vital information about our country’s most vulnerable children is presented in a single report – giving us the opportunity to focus on the needs of these children and to galvanize a comprehensive response.
