The focus of this assignment is to produce a case study of a child between 0-2yrs and 11 months. In order to get a better understanding of the environment to which the child was observed following is a written description of the setting. It is a privately owned kindergarten in an affluent area of London, registered under Ofsted. The last inspection was carried out in 2009 under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006. The kindergarten is a church owned building and operates from two halls, one ground floor the other lower. There are eight members of staff, most carry a recognised qualification and 43 children currently attending. To confirm to the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998, a pseudonym has been put in place for the child’s name, throughout this assignment the child will be known as Molly. Molly is 2yrs 8 months, is a pupil of lower kindergarten. She has been attending the setting three mornings a week since the beginning of September of this year. Molly is a confident child and interacts well with her peers; she has one older sibling who also attended the kindergarten. The key person has been employed with the company for over 10 years, so also had the pleasure of teaching her sibling. Molly’s key person plays an important part of ensuring her holistic needs are being met on a daily basis. She plans, provides and implements activities with guidance from the EYFs framework (DFEs 2012), whilst also enabling as positive and safe environment. In order for the observations to take place permission had to be obtained, so a conversation was held with Molly’s parent where an agreement was signed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the setting (see appendix 1).
