Women had few rights and were controlled by their husbands. Changing attitudes towards women in British society was an important factor in winning women the vote in 1918 however other factors were also involved. The peaceful actions of the suffragists and the violence of the suffragettes helped win support and publicity for women suffrage. The role of women at home in Britain during WW1and international pressure of introducing women’s suffrage also led to women receiving the vote by 1918. Changing attitude towards women in Britain society helped women achieve the vote in 1918.
It gave birth to feminism ideas which saw women receive a high-level education like their male counterparts. It initiated gender neutrality in almost every domain in life. Women began pushing for rights to initiate divorce proceedings and asserted their reproductive rights. Women suffrage granted women the right to own property and enter into contracts on their own right. Active involvement of women in politics and governance through the ballot has had a profound effect on world politics and finance.
In the first chapter the author focuses in how and when the 19th amendment took place. Also, the explanation in chapter one of one of the main leaders of this women suffrage that fight for the civil right in women, the author make this to present the subject or main them of her book. For example, the author said in the book “ The national leader of the suffragist movement to lead the final fight in the struggle for women suffrage” this prove that at the main subject of this book his about the suffrage of the women. This book well clearly maintains the main theory that wan to
How important was Emmeline Pankhurst in bringing about votes for women? Emmeline Pankhurst was the leader of the Suffragettes; a strong movement of women who used violence and intimidation in an effort to win women the vote. Suffrage is the right to vote in political elections, and until 1918, women did not have this right. Suffragists or The National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society (NUWSS) was formed in 1897 and led by Millicent Fawcett. This group was made up of mainly middle class women and campaigned peacefully to win the right to vote in political elections for women.
Although women have the right to vote today, this is quite different compared with women’s condition back in the late 1800’s. Women were treated unfairly; they just belonged to their husbands who were able to control all of their rights and use a moderate coercion if they were disloyal or disobedient. Being a woman who is willing to break the rules to bring back a freedom life for all women, Susan B. Anthony tried to vote for a presidential election and was arrested due to being female in 1872. During her trial, Anthony published a speech “On Women’s right to vote”. In her speech, the main reason Anthony was successful in persuading her audience was that she clearly established an exigent circumstance early and effectively adapted her writing to the kairos of the moment.
The mission of the NAWSA was to fight for women’s rights and to also gain respect for all women in the United States. Alice Paul along with her friend Lucy Burns began to think of many ideas to help the suffrage movement but the NAWSA thought that their ideas were to extreme and would only cause problems for women in America. So Alice Paul and Lucy Burns started their own organization called the National Women’s Party or NWP. Which held the same concepts that the NAWSA but with a more radical or extreme approach. The NAWSA started criticizing the NWP for their methods and for protesting a president during the war.
In my point of view from all the research I have done women tend to have more interest in political events and are interested in what is happening around them and how it is going to affect them and their families. Another example of a woman role model in politics is Ms. Sonia Sotomayor. She was in a poor position since a young age but as she expressed her feelings and continued to have excellent grades she progressed; after all the hard work she has put into her education she is now the 1st Hispanic women and 3rd in line female to become an associate justice in the supreme
Fighting for a cause The women’s suffrage movement, symbol of nineteenth and early twentieth century feminism, is the one most visible manifestation of women’s emancipation. From the birth of the nation to a Constitutional Amendment passed in 1920, suffrage for women had been batted aside, ignored, criticized, and denied. Those who attacked women’s suffrage were attacking much more than the idea that women as well as men should enter the polling booth. Across America women living in the 1900’s were angry and tired of feeling betrayed and treated as an unequal second class citizen. However these brave remarkable women decided to take action that helped forever changed American history, the right to vote.
New forms of public life created by women - such as having an education, to fight for their equality of opportunity to get a career, fighting for their rights and changing their role from domesticity to public suffragists- reinforced their place in society. Women had many dramatic changes throughout the years dealing with their view as a woman, politics, labor force and popular culture. In the present, American women continued live in regard to work, family, sexuality, and political changes. A. Sara M. Evans is a distinguished scholar and Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Minnesota where she taught women's history since 1976. She studied women and gender studies as it can be seen by reading her book because of the knowledge she transmits about women’s history and all the stages women went through decades ago.
The main goal of progressivism is to make the U.S. a greater democracy. There are movements to create recalls for unsatisfying politicians. There are movements to create referendum and direct election of senators for the people to have a more direct voice. To continue this democratizing trend, women need to get the right to vote. Women must obey the law, so they should be able to help make the laws.
