“History of Tennis” Tennis is one of the most premier sports that most don’t know about. I play tennis for my College, but outside of scoring I don’t know much about the sport. I’ve had fellow students, who came out to support our games ask me about some of the terminology, and I could only answer tennis. I’m curious about the meaning of some of these terms. How did the idea for tennis come about? Why did some of the terms get there? The answers to these questions may come as a surprise to most. Many people watch tennis on television, or in person, and become lost by some of the terms. There are many terms that people don’t understand, and some that I didn’t understand until today. Let’s start off with the scoring; the game is scored 15, 30, 40, and game. The game’s scoring was supposed to be sequence based off the time an increment in an hour, 45 was simplified to 40. Deuce means both players have equal scores, and must win by two, which is the hint by the word deuce (2). Love comes from a symbol of an egg shaped like a zero, letting a player know that the respective player has zero points. The word tennis came from France, who derived the word called tenir, which means I am about to serve. The word racquet comes from the Arabic word rahkat, which means the palm of my hand. Let means an error or uncontrolled variable has occurred during the point, and the point is replayed. Tennis would have never come into existence without Christianity. The story is that monks. The origin of tennis can be tracked back to an ancient Greek game called sphairistike, but its start came as a result of The Second Shepards play. In this play, the men give three gifts to newborn Christ, one of which happened to be a tennis ball. Major Walter Wingfield decided to temporarily use the Greek name of the game to launch it, and he patented the name in order to establish the official
