State of Advance Practice/Week 2 Patricia Grayson-Canty Chamberlain College of Nursing NR 510 Leadership and Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse Terri Schmitt Professor Spring B 2014 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to further examine the state of advanced practice nursing from a local, state, national, and international perspective. The role of the nurse practitioner (NP) “evolved from the shortage of primary care medical providers in underserved areas in the 1960s” (DeNisco & Barker, 2013, p. 20). NPs became a much needed asset during the Great Society era due to the development of the government health programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and Community health Centers that needed care providers. These programs helped

RUP 1 Laurie Mahaffey Western Governors University A. Functional Differences The differences between a regulatory agency such as the Board of Nursing (BON) and a Professional Nursing Organization (PNO) is that the BON regulates, writes laws, approves licensure and governs nurses at all levels of nursing and at all levels of care. Its ultimate goal is protection of the patient. A PNO consist of groups of nurses that gather for the purpose of education, information sharing, benchmarking and overall growth of the nursing profession and the patients they serve. PNO’s provide strength to the nurse’s voice as well as serving as an advocate for patients (Matthews, 2012). The states regulate laws established to protect the

I wrote this book after reflecting on my professional and personal experiences and my lifelong commitment to the nursing profession, in which I wanted to organise and improve the delivery of nursing care. Background I was born in Florence, Italy on May 12, 1820, and named after the city, hence my name Florence Nightingale. I grew up in England, and my parents were wealthy and well educated; we had several residences. I was educated by my father, who studied at Cambridge University, and spoke seven languages. I also studied mathematics, philosophy, religion, and statistics and became the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society.
Evidence based practice emerged in the early 1990s. It has developed over the last 10 years and has a huge impact on health professionals all over the world, in the form of the Cochrane Collaboration. Not only is it just medicine based but it’s also supported in different professional activities such as social work, probation, education and human resource management (Trinder & Reynolds, 2000). There are two main purposes of nursing research, the first one is that it improves the nurse’s clinical judgement and decision making and the second is that it helps to expand an exclusive body of nursing knowledge for the development of the profession (Miller & Babcock, 1996). Review of Evidence The article which has been selected to review is titled “Are sedatives and hypnotics associated with increased suicide risk of suicide in the elderly?” The authors of this article are Anders Carlsten and Margda Waern.
Description of the Theory of Human Becoming Next, the theoretician’s history and perspectives on care are highlighted, which significantly influenced the construction process of a nursing theory. Rosemarie Rizzo Parse is one of the most recent nursing theoreticians. In 1981, she published the book Nursing Fundamentals, in which she presented her ideas, proposing the nursing subject based on human sciences.5 She obtained an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and is currently serving as a lecturer at Loyola University in Chicago; she is the founder and editor of Nursing Science Quarterly and the president of Discovery International and the Institute of Human Becoming. Also, she has authored eight books and different papers.10 Parse inserted two paradigms into the discussion of nursing theories, the totality paradigm, in which man is the sum of system and considered as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being, who interacts with the environment through internal and external stimuli.
