History of Horror Films 1890 – 1929 | The late 19th century was when Horror films started to be created. The most popular theme of them at the time was the devil and evil/bad karma making disillusion events occur. Horror films originated in Japan where a lot of movies consisted of people being possessed and cursed in films, such as Bake Jizo which was produced in 1898. The majority of horror films during the 1910s and 1920s were made during the German Expressionist era which had a big influence on films that would later influence Hollywood horrors. Some of the earlier Hollywood films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Monster and Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde show the aspect of the unusual and fictional characters which are portrayed as monstrous figures to show the theme of being possessed and acting violently which became popular throughout the 1900’s. | 1930 – 1949 | In the early 30s American film producers had a wild obsession for horror films and produced films such as 1931 Dracula and Frankenstein. These films had a theme of monsters which was becoming a very popular style for horrors in these times. Other films were collaborating with the horror genre, such as The Invisible Man in which had many elements of the sci-fi genre. During the 1940s films such as The Wolfman and Cat People showed how man and animals are connected to create a “half-human half-animal” figure which links into many sci-fi elements of being unusual. Many similar films also consisted of abnormal beings which appealed to the audience and introduced the theme of aliens in future. | 1950 – 1969 | Technology was evolving quickly and becoming more advanced which led to horror films to become popular for low-budget films, of which included overcoming threats from aliens and mutations to form abnormality to unmans, insects and even plants.
