As his time at Boston progressed, the manager there decided due to Ruth’s amazing hitting ability to de-emphasize him as a pitcher and make him an outfielder. Thus, in 1919, Babe Ruth hit a then league record of 29 home runs and a .322 batting average. This ability raised his salary to an amazing $10,000 and allowed him to by a house near Boston for him and his wife. The owner of the Red Sox, Harry Frazee, was in financial trouble at the time so he sold "The Babe" to the New York Yankees for $100,000 and $300,000 in loans. The Red Sox have not won a World Series

What does a championship winning baseball team look like? Are they the hulking, barrel-chested cousins of Paul Bunyan? The answer is rarely. The game of baseball has evolved from teams with the most homeruns always being the victors, to teams with smaller and faster players playing David to the league’s Goliaths. The manner in which a player’s talent is evaluated has been changing ever since a man named Bill James first published his “Historical Baseball Abstract” in 1977.
All of baseball took notice and began to reevaluate the way they judged players. The Boston Red Sox in 2004 broke the curse of the Bambino by winning their first World Series since 1918 embracing the philosophy championed by Billy Beane’s Oakland A’s. To this day all 30 Major League Baseball teams actively use Bill James Sabermetrics. Fox, J. (2011).
This offseason the Cubs have made many moves. One free agent the Cubs have signed this offseason is Jon Lester, he is a left handed pitcher. My Journey to become a College Softball player Raegan Nunez 09/30/2012 3rd Period Honors English--Descriptive Essay Mr. Cornutt I love the thrill of standing at home plate, waiting for the pitcher to release the ball because in those few seconds I get to decide how, if and when to swing my bat. My dad signed me up for softball when I was only about seven or eight years old. I had watched the women’s college softball world series and Arizona State University took the title. Many, Henry Chadwick included, will argue that “Rounders” are the true origin of baseball but “a careful search has failed to find a copy of any printed “Rounders” rules published previous to 1845, when the Knickerbocker Base Ball Rules first made their appearance.”3 The Knickerbocker game replaced the square with a diamond and increasingly predominated in the 1850s. The baseball diamond and many of the first published rules are still in use today, suggesting that the Knickerbockers helped create traditions. Traditions are a clear indication of an origination. The old book of rules that was issued by the club in 1854 was formed with the help of Dr. Adams, “who undoubtedly is entitled to be called the Father of Base Ball.”4 Dr. Adams who graduated form Yale College and continued on to Harvard Medical School was made president of the club. Having a strong leader figure and support system behind a team is another component to success because it creates respectability.
