Kennan) refers to the First World War as “the seminal catastrophe of the 20th Century.” Why was this the case? In what ways did the war change western society? Discuss, citing specific examples. 2. Compare and contrast two of the “anti-liberal” ideologies of the mid-20th Century (for example, Fascism, Nazism, Communism). These ideologies are often described as “mass” ideologies. What was their appeal? What were their characteristics? Why would millions of people have chosen to follow them? 3. Who was responsible for the Cold War? Could it have been avoided? What were some of the legacies for the participants? Discuss, providing evidence for your assertions.
