DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Women have played an integral part in the development of Trinidad and Tobago from as far back from the time of slavery and indentureship up until present times As slaves, women used all the weapon they had which at times were their bodies to get what they want or to help their fellow slaves. Some of the impact t women created were not only locally but also internationally where a Trinidadian woman was the first black woman to win an international competition. There were also women of different ethnicity who were not born Trinidadian but worked feverously to protect the rights of children, the elderly and battered women in this society. Historically Calypsonians were of the male species but women infiltrated this arena and changes had to be made in renaming the title of their competition to facilitate the surge of female competitors. The gender barrier was also broken in the political arena where women can stand proud and say “woman is boss” because the head of the country was now a woman and women may now get an opportunity to be treated as equal. We have come a long way from walking behind the men in society. Enslaved women played an important role throughout slavery. Without these strong black women as leaders the preservation of their culture and heritage would not have been kept alive. These women would sit and tells stories of the past using their native language to the young children and other members of the community. One of the forms of resistance used by the enslaved women was by using their oral traditions. The practice of their tradition was not allowed and if seen practicing it they would have been severely disciplined.
