Hip-Hop “The thing about hip-hop is that it's from the underground, ideas from the underbelly, from people who have mostly been locked out, who have not been recognized.” (Russel Simmons) Hip-hop is not just about music, it’s about a mixture of dance, art, and escape; it’s an escape from the suffering and poverty. Since its crazy block parties in the early 1970s to the craze pleasing concerts in present time, hip-hop has gone through its changes, but has it changed positively or negatively? First of all, hip-hop is made up of four important components: DJ, breakdancing, graffiti, and rap. Each of these components makes an important part in hip-hop. DJ was the foundation of the entire cultural movement. It is what started the entire movement. Later came the idea of breakdancing. It came as an addition to the DJ finding. After time, people started to express themselves in a new way, with art. They would mark their names or slogans on walls. This was known as graffiti art. The most known part of hip-hop is rap. It expanded from the small rhymes said in the block parties. Each one of these components holds their own part in the history of hip-hop, and each of these components has it’s own beginnings. Similar concepts of hip-hop have been in the history of the world since the time of slavery. One of the well-known pioneers of the cultural movement was Clive Campbell. Clive came from Kingston, Jamaica to the Bronx. When he first arrived in the United States he felt out of place; everything was different from what he had grown up with. He started to become involved in his school, and started to play basketball. His friends started to play around with him and started to call him Hercules. He didn’t like it so they got the nickname Herc. He was later known as Kool Herc. During this time there was a lot of gang violence. Many discos and house parties were being shut down
