Running head: HINDUISM AND THE ABRHAMIC COMMONALITES Hinduism and the Abrahamic Commonalites . Introduction This week’s reading taught that Hinduism incorporates a whole variety of religious beliefs. Whereas Judaism, Christianity and Islam believe in only one God, Hinduism believes in a number of Gods. Also, whereas Judaism, Christianity and Islam believe in a heaven and hell, Hinduism believes in reincarnation. There does not seem to be a lot of similarities between Hinduism and the three other religions mentioned above. There is a tradition of prophets in the Abrahamic religions. Though the list of who these prophets were differs between these religions, at the beginning of their lists is Abraham, who lends his name to the collective term used for these faiths. The roles of the prophets are also interpreted differently within each belief system (ReligiousTolerance.org, 2008). Hinduism does not have prophets. They have Avatars instead. The difference here is that a prophet is a representative of God who delivers His message to the people. An Avatar is an incarnation of a god or goddess who has ventured into a lower realm for some purpose (Minnesota State University Mankato, 2008).
